Brief Bio

I am an Assistant Professor at the Knowledge Management Institute, Faculty of Computer Science at Graz University of Technology. From March 2006 to May 2007, I was a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Department of Computer Science at University of Toronto working in Eric Yu's group. My research stay was generously supported by an FWF Erwin Schroedinger Fellowship. I received my PhD in Computer Science from Graz University of Technology, Austria in 2004, while working for the application-oriented research organization Know-Center Graz in the field of knowledge management.

Current Research

New: Aspects of my research were featured in DerStandard (Apr 22 2009), one of Austria's largest, nation-wide newspapers. Read the article online or in print (german only).

I am interested in acquiring and representing knowledge about requirements and goals of human agents on the web. My group is studying and experimenting with socially-constructed corpora that contain what we call "traces of intent", i.e. recognizable traces of users’ goals and intentions expressed in different degrees of explicitness.

Many activities on the web are driven by high-level goals of users, such as "planning a trip" or "buying a product". Yet, the web - in its current form - is largely non-intentional, i.e. it lacks explicit intentional structures. As a result, users have to cognitively translate their high-level goals into search queries, tags, concepts or classifications. This makes it hard for web applications (such as search engines) to capture, recognize, refine and act upon user intent. I am interested in the difference between content and intent, the development of techniques and algorithms to capture and guide user intent on the web, the development of semi-automatic techniques for the construction of large-scale intentional structures and representations (e.g. collaboratively constructed goal graphs) and the development of instruments to associate goals and goal graphs with (textual or multi-media) ressources.

My group is interested in the intentional knowledge embedded in the web, and how it is transferred, formed and utilized. We are particularly interested in studying knowledge about human goals in a range of different datasets such as search query logs, bug tracking systems, goal-sharing applications and question-answering systems.

Research collaborators include the Know-Center (Graz University of Technology, Austria), Eric Yu (University of Toronto, Canada), Andrew Gordon (University of Southern California, U.S.A.), Ed Chi (Palo Alto Research Center, U.S.A.), Andreas Hotho (University of Kassel, Germany), Ralf Klamma (RWTH Aachen, Germany), Michel Wermelinger and Yijun Yu (Open University, U.K.) and Mathias Lux (Klagenfurt University, Austria)

Some of the datasets my group is working with can be found online. A tagged bibliography of papers I am interested in is available via bibsonomy.org/user/mstrohm - and via RSS .
